Long ago way back in the day
As you may know most girls learned to knit and crochet
But there was one who picked up a gun
And it wasn't too long 'til she could outshoot anyone

In eighteen-sixty - Darke County, Ohio
A girl was born on a farm where money always ran low
She rarely went to school, so she could barely read or write
One day a winter chill took her poor old father's life

She started shooting wild game and selling it
To restaurants and grocery stores
Soon the mortgage on the family farm was paid
And the story spread from door to door

Direct hit! She could split every target
Like a sharp-shootin' superstar
Much slicker and quicker, on the trigger
Than anyone by far!

At age fifteen, she really entered the scene
In a shooting competition in Cincinnati town
A man named Frank Butler was the marksman king
But a young girl in a bonnet was soon gonna take his crown

A hundred-dollar wager on the line
The crowd went quiet and still
Old Frank missed one, so Annie stepped up
And showed her superior skill

Soon Buffalo Bill came a-calling for her
To be in his travelling show
From the US to the London stage
She went with her rifle and her ammo

Sitting Bull called her his daughter of the plains
And the Queen of England knew her by her name
When they held up a card she could split it right down the edge
And shoot the ashes straight off of the end of a cigarette

She spent her final years passing her knowledge on
Teaching women how to shoot and to stand up strong
She said, ”Aim for the high mark and you will hit it"
Keep on at it, for only practice makes you perfect

Said she'd like to see every woman
Know how to handle guns
As naturally as they handle babies
Just in case danger should come

Direct hit! She could split every target
Like a sharp-shootin' superstar
Much slicker and quicker, on the trigger
Than anyone by far!
